Introduction

Do you like to party?  Well here's your chance!!  You and your colleagues have just been chosen by your employer to create a quinceañera elegante for Mercedes Barrios Ruiz.  You and your team, along with several other agencies, will present your finished plan to La Familia Barrios in hopes of being selected to coordinate the affair. Each group will provide a brochure complete with pictures and necessary information during your presentation.  Better start practicing your salesmanship!  Buena Suerte!
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Task

*Your task as a group is to plan a Quinceañera for Merecedes Barrios Ruiz.

*Each group will receive a packet containing things that the family feels are necessary details for you, the planners of their daughter's big day. These items may include specific locations, music, and/ or food for the celebration. Be sure to take these things into consideration when as you plan.

*Each team will be asked to draw a slip of paper from a box.  This slip contains the maximum amount of money that can be spent by the family for this party.  The amounts will range between lower class, middle class, and upper class.

*Each member of your team will choose a different role on the team.  Each of you will look for information pertaining to your specific role on the internet.

*Each group will create a pamphlet or brochure to give to the familia Barrios during your sales pitch containing your completed proposal.  La Familia will be played by either a panel of Students from the class or teachers.

*After hearing all presentations, the panel will then decide which Agency gave the best and most convincing sales pitch for each socio-economic group.  These teams will be exempted from the test following the project.

*You will have 1 week (5 school days) from today to create your finished product and prepare your sales pitch.  Be creative!  Your final pitch will be graded on salesmanship, visual and/or multi-media aids, accuracy, and of course your pamphlet.  You will each receive an individual grade for the pamphlet and a group presentation grade.  Remember, you are  professional party planners and you do this for a living.  You must impress the family in order to land this account, and of course if you do you will make a huge commission.

Process
1.  Name your company/Agency

2.  You have been assigned to a group of four people, each of you now need to choose a role to play within the company. Your choices are as follows:

3.  In order to plan a quinceañera celebration, you must first familiarize yourselves with the traditions.  Use the links below to help you to complete the worksheet handed out by your teacher.
  4.  Next you will draw a budget amount for your group out of the box.  Each group will have a different amount of money to work with, some will work for a wealthy family and others for a middle-lower class family.  Divide the budget you drew according to how much you feel each person should need.  You may give more money to one person over another due to the nature of their portion of the whole project.  For example, if the parents are going to have the party at their home, the Transportation/location Manager would need fewer dollars, so you may want to give more money to the other three team members.

5.  On a separate sheet of paper, make a list of the things you think you will need to look into and/or get for each role.  Write an estimated cost for each item. Then confer as a group to make suggestions and to delete any unnecessary items from the lists.

6.  Number the items on your list by importance.  Number one would be the most important and so on.  This way you will know what you could eliminate first if necessary.

7. Individually, you will look for information on the internet. You will need to print a hard copy of every site where you find information that you use in your proposal.  Keep in mind that to get prices you may need to call the 800 number listed for some sites, as many companies do not put prices on-line.
Here are some sites you to get you started:

Dresses 1
Dresses 2
Dresses 3
Hair
Mariachi
DJ
Music
Index

8.  When everyone has their information, get together and share what you have found with your team.  Discuss your options and make final decisions on what to keep and what to throw out.

9.  Individually make a pamphlet page for a brochure of the finished proposal.  The brochure needs to include the price of each part of the Quinceañera as well as the overall price.  This will be presented to the class in a "pitch" to La Familia Barrios.

10.  Each group will present their party plan to the clients(a panel) in a short oral "pitch" (at least 15 minutes in length) during class.  The class/panel will vote on which "quince" is the best for each budget level.  The group that wins is exempt from the test which follows this project.

Score
Visual presentation-art

Sloppy, used pen/pencil.  Hard to see and/or read.  No visual/media used at all.
Project is somewhat neat, but needs work.  Words are not easily read and more color is needed to catch the eye of the client. Minimal use of viusal/media elements.
The project is very neat, but the organization is not as good as it could be.  There could have been more visuals/media used to enhance the finished product.  Words were neat and readable. Colorful.
The project is neat and orderly.  There are several pictures/multi-media presentations involved.  The information is easy to find/read.  Everything is colorful and bright.

Spelling and Grammar

Numerous spelling and grammar errors.  Use only simple sentences. Crossing out and use of arrows frequent.
Not as many errors as beginning, but still a bit careless with spelling/grammar.  Common errors being made in areas covered in class.  Little to no use of complex sentence structures.  A few things crossed out, but not many.
Spelling perfect and very few grammatical errors made.  Most of which are concepts not covered extensively in class.  Sentences are more longer and generally more complex.
Spelling and grammar are perfect. Good use of complex thoughts and ideas.  Expressed very professionally.

Coverage of topic

Barely covered section of the party.  No information provided.  No prices/ estimates given.
Gives some information, but leaves out some essentials.  Does not include all prices, only some.  Tells few details of the package.
Includes prices for all, but does not give thorough information about what is included in the prices.  More details are necessary to completely understand .
Includes all information necessary for a client to decide upon purchasing this package.  Gives prices and estimates.  Also gives telephone numbers and email addresses for further study if desired

Valid Information?

Turned in no hard copies of information used.  No proof.
Turned in some hard copies of info used, but not others.
Turned in hard copies of all information, but didn't use all correctly.
Turned in hard copy for everything used.  All facts are clearly found in the hard copies.

"Pitch"
Salesmanship
Not professional at all.  Spoke as if among buddies at home.
Tried to sell the product, but wasn't familiar enough with the information.  Had to keep referring to the brochure for info.
Very professional, but lacked the enthusiasm necessary to make a sale. Clients left feeling like they will still look around.
Very professional, excellent people skills.  Knew the information by heart and made the clients feel like they were getting the deal of the century.  Clients felt convinced after the pitch.

Accuracy The information given did not coincide to the brochure quite often. The information given had some flaws/inconsistencies with the brochure, but they were minimal. Very accurate, but missed 1 point. Exactly as the brochure said.
Visual Aids None used Few, those used were sloppy and incomplete. Nicely done, but needed to have a few more.  Needed to go into more detail. Didn't catch the eye, sort of boring.. Well used and sufficient to help the client see the package more clearly.  All were neat and eye catching.

Conclusion

Now that you have completed your web quest, you are more familiar with the different customs and components of a sweet fifteen.  Take some time to answer the following questions about the traditional Quinceañera on a separate sheet of paper.  You may answer in English.

1.  After listening to all of the presentations, what did you learn about planning a party such as this one?

2.  Do you think that a Quinceañera is really necessary, or do you feel it is a waste of money?  Explain your answer.

3.  If you were giving a Quinceañera, which aspect would be most important to you and why?
